*This is a Khloe dedicated post because I know I’m gonna get a lot of questions about why we decided to send her back. It’s gonna be a long post! ahaha*
Two Sundays ago, my sister, Justin, and I drove back from Riverside with Khloe. The breeder told us she gave Khloe an anti-stress pill to help her from having diarrhea. During the whole car ride, we would see her try to poop, but she usually gave up and went back to sleep. Through the week, we watched her try and try, and we just assumed she was constipated. After two days, we started getting really concerned so we took her to the vet. They gave her stool softeners to make everything try and flow out better. However, it still didn’t help. Khloe still couldn’t poop, and it was just getting worse and worse. Four days later, we took her to the vet again, though with a different doctor. He said that, though he wasn’t 100% sure, he was almost positive that it was a birth defect and she wouldn’t survive. We didn’t want to believe it 1) because she’s so little, and so cute and 2) because the vet told it to us in a snobby, matter of fact, just-deal-with-it kind of attitude, plus he was totally rushing us out. We went back later that night to another vet, just to get another opinion. They did a mini-barium enema, though not a very thorough one since they didn’t want to sedate Khloe. They referred us to a surgical vet clinic since the result of the enema was out of their league. The surgical vets were all optimistic that it would be helpful, but once they performed a thorough enema, they found that it was a congenital defect. Turns out she couldn’t have a normal bowel movement because her the tube that was supposed to be for poop was split into two very skinny tubes, causing it to be almost impossible for her to have a normal bowel movement. It was a surgical procedure, but like every surgery, there are always its risks, and in a puppy this small the risk was extremely high. My sister kept in constant contact with the breeder since the first time we went to the vet. The breeder was convinced that we were also just being overly cautious, and that Khloe would eventually grow out of it. When we found out that surgery was the only option, we were def. heart broken, but we wanted to do what we could to help and save this poor puppy. But when we found out that there is a large amount of stool backed up in her stomach, the vets told us that she would possibly die from toxic shock since it takes her a lot longer to release. They said that putting her down was a possibility that we would have to consider. The breeder, legally, should pay for a part of the medical bills involved, but since she is still not convinced that Khloe has a birth defect, she insists that we give “return” the puppy, while giving us a partial refund. So that’s where we are now. Khloe, my sister, and Justin are at the airport right now awaiting a 6:45AM plane to deliver Khloe back to the breeder. It’s a good thing Justin’s a lawyer, cuz she is doing a bunch of things that she shouldn’t be doing, and without him, we wouldn’t have known about all these pet owner’s laws to be protected from breeders.
My dad keeps saying that she was guided to us from Baby (our previous dog that passed this summer). He says that Baby knew Khloe was sick, and directed us to her so that we could give her a chance to have a normal life, a fun, happy one. My mom says that she was our little Christmas present sent from Baby because she gave us all so much joy in the past two weeks. So, even though she doesn’t even know what is going on, we know that she really enjoyed the past two weeks here at our house. She was eating normally, drinking plenty of water, and peeing normally, just not having regular bowel movements. And though she was only here for two weeks, we took her in as a member of our family, loving her as one. It also made us appreciate our lives a lot more, and think about how unfair life is. We aren’t sure what’s going to happen to Khloe now, because the breeder isn’t obligated to update us, but we’re keeping her in our thoughts and prayers, and hoping for the best to pull through. We love you, Khloe (: If anything does happen, we know that at least Baby will be looking after her little sister, Khloe. <3
